For those not on MySpace: help Razorblade Monalisa get a music awards nomination!

The 2008 Sammies (for non-Sac locals, that's the Sacramento Area Music Awards) nomination period continues for one more week. Help Razorblade Monalisa get nominated in the Rock category (unfortunately, Post-Punk is not an option) by sending your request to sactoletters@newsreview.com. A nomination would give us the chance to get even more shows and every little bit helps.

Thanks and spread the word!

RM cd release & show this Thursday @ Equinox

Our second full lengh release Souvenir will be available for purchase at our show this Thursday @ Equinox for $10!

It includes all the songs from the Eyes and Four Short Stories (for girls and boys) EPs, some never before released material, and some live tracks from our shows in 2005 and 2006.

This is the last release that includes only Bino, Josh and I, and probably the last appearance of our faithful drum machine "Reginald".

We will be playing many songs from this release plus a taster of the new stuff which is quite frankly some of the best stuff we've done yet. We start at around 11.

From the Equinox website/Myspace:

Yep, that's me. Boring as hell.

What American accent do you have? (Best version so far)

Midland

("Midland" is not necessarily the same thing as "Midwest") The default, lowest-common-denominator American accent that newscasters try to imitate. Since it's a neutral accent, just because you have a Midland accent doesn't mean you're from the Midland.

Just so I don't lose the quote

"We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented."

Our new song

I'm pretty proud of this one. Yes it's another ballad, but isn't in any way formulaic. It has a rather odd tempo shift in the middle, and no real "Chorus" in the tradional sense.

It's been a comment by more than one person that our music is "sex music", while I can't personally attest to this, I did write the music wanting to convey the feelings of really wanting someone, prehaps right before the first time (or perhaps never having the opportunity). Bino's lyrics are an interesting counterpoint, the longing is there, but the ends aren't obvious, which is always good in my book.

Enough prattling, enjoy the song.

Special NOIR tonight: it's my birthday!

Well, sort of. It's actually on Friday, but I'm celebrating tonight. I'm going to be spinning for at least 3 sets tonight, starting from 9 - 10ish.

My first set will be all stuff i've wanted to play, but never had the chance: Johnny Cash, Billie Holliday, and other assorted stuff will be sprinkled in between the Post-Punk, Deathrock, Glam, Britpop, and whatever I feel like. The other two sets will be more the typical NOIR, but i'm going to have fun the first hour ;)

Sooo, you are all going to be there, right? Don't buy me too many drinks tho, have to work in the morning, so just 5 or 6 will be ok.;)

-Jules.

Hitchhikers Guide movie review.

Full disclosure: I have read all the Hitchhiker books, I've read the radio scripts, listened to the full radio series and watched the excellent BBC series.

The Hitchhikers Guide movie isn't bad. It's just not particularly good either. Working a book into a movie isn't the easiest of tasks, especially when you are dealing with comedy.

Cerebral wit is not easy to convey on film because of it's subtle nature. Douglas Adams was always at his best when he made you smile, he will not make you laugh out loud very often, but he wasn't really trying for that either. The Hitchiker movie crew made a valiant attempt at converting the cerebral humor to slapstick, making one wonder where Jim Carrey was.

The cast were all mis-cast. I can't think if one actor that completely worked, but they did try their best, and you can tell. Even Bill Nighy, generally very good in anything he does, seemed out of place. I couldn't help watching his interpretation of "Slartibardfast" as if it was a audition reel for the role of Doctor Who.

The script is really what lets the film down. There were many liberties taken with the original material, presumably in an effort to "update" it. But very little of the new material works.

What does work: the effects, while not completely mind blowing, are rather good. The opening number with the singing dolphins was quite fun, and made you wonder if this really was going to be better than you thought it would. The Vogons are very well realized, tho the performances of the Vogons themselves were variable. They were a tiny part of the book, but elevated as the main badies for the movie, perhaps that was the first serious mis-step.

I would recommend this film to someone who never read the book or watched the series. It may seem a lot more fun for someone with less experience with the original material. As long as they read the book and watch the TV series later.

5 out of 10 for the effort. If you were already a Hitchhiker fan, you might want to watch, but you will be disappointed, and a little sad for the missed opportunity.
